Hi Joanne,

Before taking this course, I really didn't give much thought to how restricted we actually are in terms of our Internet use in our schools... but now that I know more... and our teacher-librarians are beginning to ask more questions about why they can't have access to YouTube or read Joyce Valenza's blog, I can see that I am going to need to become more proactive in advocating for increased access. We all talk about Web 2.0 tools and services, but we certainly don't have access to any authentic exemplars from within our portal.

There are both educators and computer science people in our Information Systems department, and they make a formidable team. I am just introducing databases for the first time (with the exception of World Book)to this group, so I am beginning to develop more of a relationship with this department... which I hope will eventually lead to conversations about filters and increased access. In terms of having a sight unblocked, it's not impossible... but there is a rather lengthy online form which is completed and reviewed by the department... which can grant or deny access.

I will definitely watch for an opportunity to bring our concerns to the forefront.

Thanks for your thoughts about social bookmarking. I really like your analogy to the home organization shows that are so popular right now. I think most of us can identify with that feeling like we all feel disorganized a lot of the time--how good it feels to have at least one part of our lives organized in a way that makes it easy to access.

I'm sorry to hear that these sites are blocked in your division--is that something that can be changed? What is the process like to have a site like delicious unblocked?
