I appreciate your discussion of how to use web 2.0 tools even within a filtered environment--this is an important thing to consider and one that many teachers and teacher-librarians are dealing with regularly.  You rightly point out that using blogs or wikis within a portal system might seem artificial at first glance, but it is a start and it allows you to work within the system that you have.
